NFL Trade (and Signing) Block

I’ve recently discussed possibilities for players to either sign or get traded to certain teams. This analysis has been all over the place, so I thought I’d move everything to one page.

Colts RB Jonathan Taylor reportedly requests trade (July 29, 2023)
It’s a difficult time to be a running back. The players at the position are paid so little compared to other positions that they’ve considered organizing a strike. Unfortunately for them, the market is paying what is appropriate, given supply and demand.

Jonathan Taylor, one of the disgruntled running backs, has reportedly requested a trade. The talented runner is only 24, so he has plenty remaining in the tank, despite his injury-ravaged 2022 campaign.

Here are some teams that could trade for Taylor:

New York Jets: The Jets wanted to draft Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 15, and they have since flirted with Dalvin Cook. If they want to stay away from Cook and all of his problems, trading for Taylor would make sense.

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins have also shown interest in Cook, but may not sign Cook because of his off-the-field issues.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills signed Damien Harris to pair with James Cook, but they don’t have much of a running game.

Cincinnati Bengals: As I wrote below in the Dalvin Cook selection, Joe Mixon struggled last year, and yet the Bengals don’t have anything of note behind him in the wake of the Samaje Perine departure.

Philadelphia Eagles: Philadelphia has already acquired D’Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny this offseason, but you can never count out Howie Roseman to make a blockbuster trade.

Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys could make a blockbuster trade as well, especially if they think the Eagles are interested. Tony Pollard is a dynamic threat, but it remains to be seen if he can handle a full workload.

Chicago Bears: Chicago has some middling options at running back like Khalil Herbert and D’Onta Foreman, but none of them are nearly as good as Taylor.

Vikings cut RB Dalvin Cook (updated June 10, 2023)
Dalvin Cook has rushed for at least 1,100 yards in each of the past four years, catching 170 passes in that span. And yet, the Vikings released him. Cook has somewhat of a checkered injury history, but has been able to remain healthy recently. He’ll certainly generate interest on the open market.

Here are some teams that could sign Cook:

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins are considered the favorites to sign Cook. They have three decent running backs – Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., Devon Achane – but none of them are dynamic backs like Cook.

Denver Broncos: The Broncos have been linked to Cook as well. Javonte Williams is coming off a torn ACL and probably won’t be ready to start the year.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills signed Damien Harris to pair with James Cook, but I don’t think that’ll preclude them from obtaining Cook, who would be a big upgrade.

Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys may re-sign Ezekiel Elliott eventually, but perhaps they’ll want a better back to pair with Tony Pollard.

New York Jets: The Jets had interest in Jahmyr Gibbs in the 2023 NFL Draft. There’s concern that Breece Hall may not be ready for the season opener.

Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Mixon struggled last year, and yet the Bengals don’t have anything of note behind him in the wake of the Samaje Perine departure.
