  • Bralen Trice 2024 Preview
    By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap: It took over three years, but Trice finally broke out for the Huskies in 2022. He redshirted in 2019 and was a backup in 2020. After recording 14 tackles and two sacks in 2021, Trice exploded in 2022, ripping off nine sacks, 12 tackles for a loss and 38 tackles.

2023 Season Outlook: Trice has plenty of vulnerable opponents on his 2023 schedule, so he should produce a quality stat line. The best games to test him should come against Oregon on Oct. 14, USC on Nov. 4, and Utah on Nov. 11. All three of those schools feature mobile quarterbacks, with the USC’s Caleb Williams being the favorite to be the No. 1-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Skill-Set Summary: The NFL is always in need of pass rushers who can get after the quarterback, so there should be plenty of teams giving Trice serious consideration for the 2024 NFL Draft. He showed a real ability to harass the trigger man in 2022, and he has the upside to perform even better now that he has a year of playing experience.

Against the pass, Trice demonstrates a good rush plan and an ability to get off of blocks. He has a quick first-step off the ball and gets upfield faster than many offensive tackles are prepared for. Once upfield, Trice uses active hands to slap away linemen. He showcased an impressive rip move in 2022 that allowed him to gain leverage on offensive tackles and shed their blocks. Considering Trice was in his first season of serious playing time, he had impressive technique to use both his hands and feet at the same time to get the better of edge blockers. Trice featuress functional upper body strength that helps him scrap with blockers and keep them from sustaining blocks or get a good hold of him.

Trice competes in run defense and makes an effort to chase down ball-carriers out of his gap. He is best in pursuit and plays physical football. While Trice has adequate size to play on the edge at the next level, he is not overly powerful, so he must continue to grow stronger to hold up against the much larger offensive tackles who coming downhill at him in the NFL. Incresing his power will be a point of emphasis for Trice’s development.

Like all college players, Trice has things to work on for the NFL. He has good, but not elite, speed off the edge, so further improving his get-off would help him. He also could stand to concentrate on the hoops drill to help him drop his body lower and redirect to the quarterback. While Trice is not overly stiff, improving his agility to change direction will only make him more dangerous.

If Trice can stays consistent with his 2022 performance in 2023, he should receive consensus starter grades from team evaluators. With a big season, Trice could be a riser for the 2024 NFL Draft.

2024 NFL Draft Expectations: Trice looks like a potential first-round pick for the 2024 NFL Draft as the 2023 season approaches.
