  • Joe Alt 2024 Preview
    By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap: Under former head coach Brian Kelly, Notre Dame was a consistent factory for NFL offensive linemen, and Alt is one of the final recruits from Kelly’s time in South Bend. After some early action as a backup, Alt became a starter five games into his freshman season and started the final eight games in 2021. In 2022, Alt started all 13 games at left tackle for the Fighting Irish and was a steady presence at the point of attack.

2023 Season Outlook: Alt has an easy opening month of the season before perhaps his toughest test of the year with Ohio State on Sept. 23. Buckeyes edge rushers J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer could be some of the better edge defenders he will see in 2023. Alt will see good talent in other games taking on Clemson on Nov. 4 and Stanford on Nov. 25.

Skill-Set Summary: Alt follows in a line of quality NFL offensive line prospects like Mike McGlinchey, Ronnie Stanley, Quenton Nelson, and the Martin brothers – Zach and Nick- out of Notre Dame. Among that group, Alt would be most similar to McGlinchey in terms of being a huge edge blocker who is a solid player, but not a flawless perimeter blocker.

In the ground game, Alt is a contributor who uses his size to tie up defenders. Alt is not a physical force who will overpower and overwhelm defenders, knocking them backward or rolling them around the field. He is more of a blocker who ties up defenders, stalls them, turns them, and manipulates them out of the play. Alt’s mass and length can make defenders struggle to get free of him and get in on a tackle.

Alt has a natural advantage in pass blockeing thanks to being so huge. That size makes it hard for defenders to get around him. They need takes extra steps to get past Alt, and that gives his quarterback an extra split second, which can be valuable. Alt has good awareness, is smart, and shows developed technique. With his length and mass, he ties up defenders and keeps them from shedding blocks easily.

Alt has adequate feet and quickness, but he is not an all-world athlete who possesses excellent speed on the edge. Alt is not a smooth mover who can slide with his feet and glide easily to cut off speed rushers, like say Ronnie Stanley. Alt gets into trouble when he stands up too high and lets defenders get into his chest. As a result of size and being limited with quickness and agility, Alt could be better off playing right tackle in the NFL.

2024 NFL Draft Expectations: Entering the 2023 season, Alt could be an early-round prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft.
