Career Recap: In the new era of college football, small-school talents are getting snatched up in the transfer portal and moving on to bigger competition. Verse impressed while playing for Albany to start out his carrer. He began things undersized, but added weight and also made the switch from tight end to defensive end. While playing in 15 games over two seasons, Verse totaled 74 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, 14.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. His final season at Albany, 2021, was a full year, saw him record 10 tackles for a loss, four sacks and 22 tackles, while playing well against good competition.

Verse then transferred to Florida State for 2022 and demonstrated he has NFL potential. On the year, Verse totaled 47 tackles, 16.5 tackles for a loss and nine sacks while providing a big presence for the Seminoles. It was surprising when Verse decided to return to Florida State rather than enter the 2023 NFL Draft.

2023 Season Outlook: Verse will see some quality offensive lines this coming season against LSU and Clemson.

Skill-Set Summary: Team sources who have seen Verse in person say he is a good-looking kid with strength and athletic ability. They note he runs well, plays hard, and has impressive tools. However, they shared they feel Verse is raw and not naturally instinctive. Those issues are not surprising considering the huge jump in competition that Verse made for 2022.

As a pass rusher, Verse shows the athleticism to sink his hips to get turned to the quarterback. He is a fluid defender who can use his hands and feet at the same time while working upfield. Verse possesses quickness to close and is a threat to turn the corner and has enough speed to dart by offensive tackles. Along with his speed, Verse has functional strength to shed blocks, using his hands well to break free of them before turning on his quickness to dart away.

Verse’s strength translates well to run defendse, as he can stack offensive linemen at the line of scrimmage and keep them from pushing him back. With his active hands, Verse shows the ability to work off his blocks and make tackles out of his gap. Verse has steady motor, playing hard and fighting to get in on tackles in the ground game. You don’t see Verse taking plays off or loafing when the play goes away from him.

Verse could help himself in 2023 by showing increased instincts and improved recognition skills. If he can diagnosis things a little faster, that will make him even more dangerous and let him play at a higher speed. Verse has some rawness in his technique, so refining his pass-rushing moves will be necessary as he grows in the NFL.

For the next level, Verse looks like an impactful edge rusher who could fit in either a 4-3 or 3-4 defense. He could line up over either tackle and should be an asset in both the pass rush and run defense.

2024 NFL Draft Expectations: Entering the 2023 season, Verse looks like a potential first-round pick for the 2024 NFL Draft.
