  • Michael Hall Jr. 2024 Preview
    By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap: Michael Hall Jr. looked like he was poised to have a massive 2022 season early on and dominate college football. He was tremendous in the season opener against Notre Dame and in Week 2 against Arkansas State, totaling five tackles for a loss over those two contests. However, Hall then started dealing with nagging injuries. While he played in 12 games, he only started five because of those injuries. Despite being limited, Hall tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks and also contributed 7.5 tackles for a loss, and 19 tackles. It was Hall’s first season of serious playing time for the Buckeyes.

2023 Season Outlook: Hall is going to see some quality offensive lines during his 2023 campaign. The best games to watch him could be against Notre Dame on Sept. 23, Penn State on Oct. 21, Michigan State on Nov. 11 and Michigan on Nov. 25.

Skill-Set Summary: One of the toughest commodities for NFL teams to find is a defensive tackle with pass-rush ability. Possessing an impactful interior rusher is a prize possession, and those athletes are few and far between. Hall has the ability and upside to be a potential contributor to the pass rush as a pro, so he should have a lot of eyes on him as an upperclassman.

In the pass rush, Hall is quick off the ball and a capable three-technique to line up over the outside shoulder of the guard. Hall uses his quick first-step to fire his gap and get penetration upfield. With his burst to fire into the backfield, Hall has real ability to create disruption in the backfield while denying quarterbacks the ability to step up in the pocket. Hall also has some athleticism to redirect and adjust to scrambling signal-callers. Hall is not stiff and has loose hips to change direction. While Hall is quick, he also shows some upper strength to slap hands away while working to upfield to get after quarterbacks.

As a run defender, Hall is at his best firing his gap and trying to cause disruption in the backfield. He is not terribly undersized for the NCAA, but he does lack some weight and length for the NFL. Hence, he could have issues with mass and defending downhill runs coming straight at him. Showing the ability to handle rushing attacks would help his grade for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Hall could stand to show more pass-rushing moves in 2023. He has speed and strength, but it would help him to add more rips and spins, plus refine in his bull rush. Hall has a good skill set with upside; he just needs to get more consistent and productive.

If Hall continues to improve, he has the potential to be a starting three-technique in the NFL. He could be a contributor in a one-gap scheme as an interior disruptor and pass rusher.

2024 NFL Draft Expectations: Entering the 2023 season, Hall looks like a player who has early-round potential for the 2024 NFL Draft.
