  • Xavier Worthy 2024 Preview
    By Charlie Campbell

Career Recap: From his true freshman season on, Worthy has been a playmaking presence for Texas. In his 2021 debut, he recorded 62 catches for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns. While the Longhorns were dealing with injuries at the quarterback position in 2022, Worthy continued to play at a high level as a sophomore turning 60 receptions into 760 yards and nine touchdowns. He also contributed somewhat as a punt returner with 9.7 yards per return.

2023 Season Outlook: Worthy should run through the Big XII secondaries without an issue in 2023. His best test could come in Week 2 against Alabama, when he will see a secondary of future pros, including cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry and versatile defensive back Malachi Moore.

Skill-Set Summary: The NFL is driven by passing, so there is little doubt that a lot of teams around the league are going to be interested in adding Worthy to their roster. He is an explosive wideout who has special speed and playmaking ability. With his ability to make game-changing plays, Worthy is a fit for any pro offense.

Worthy is explosive off the line of scrimmage and shows twitchy moves out of his break to create separation from defensive backs. Worthy also is a threat to beat coverage deep by using his speed on verticals, while his quickness out of his breaks makes him a dangerous route-runner who will get open. Worthy tracks the ball well and shows impressive concentration to lock in receptions even with defenders bearing down on him, despite the potential to take huge hits.

Worthy catches the ball with his hands and is dangerous once he has made the reception. With elusive moves and cutting ability, Worthy will rip off yards after contact and make some tacklers look bad as they grasp at air after Worthy has already darted past them. Even though he is not a big receiver, Worthy shows toughness to fight through tackles, plus he is willing to dish out some violence to tacklers himself.

The biggest negative about Worthy is his slim frame, which will inherently create durability concerns among pro evaluators. Worthy could help himself by adding some weight to his frame, provided he can without sacrificing his speed. Worthy could fit in the NFL as an outside or slot receiver.

2024 NFL Draft Expectations: Entering the 2023 season, Worthy looks like a potential early-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
